Julian Vaughan Esq. began his life in the damp, emerald shadows of a Welsh Valley, a place where the first interrogation came from the slanting daily rain. He has spent the decades since running – a rootless ghost drifting through departure lounges and slipping across dusty border crossings, always searching for a “something” that remains perpetually out of focus.

Forty years later, the trail has reached Sofia, but now the best-laid plans are off the table, littering the floor. Nobody predicted this – least of all Julian himself. And for the first time, he isn’t travelling alone.

But before we navigate this latest dilemma, we must look back. The origin of the ache, the drive, lies in the beginning; read the opening chapter here, and if you’re ready for the truth, climb aboard the train through the stations of the past back to the uneasy present.

Welcome to the greyscale club.

This isn’t your average book club; it’s a creative collaborative endeavour. By joining, you’re more than just a reader – you’re a co-conspirator. After the second chapter, which dropped on 19.04.26, at 19.00 Eastern European Time, there’ll be two fresh chapters a month starting in May.

You’ll also have direct access to the labyrinth of my creative process, and the power to leave your mark by naming one of the characters, shops, or streets that Julian encounters. When the journey finally ends, a signed and dedicated copy of the physical book will be yours to keep.

The fare? Just €5 per month for a year. That’s an espresso. Or half an espresso martini. Stirred, but unshaken.

Julian is currently waiting on a back street in the Bulgarian capital, waiting for the sweep of headlights washing across the cobbles.

Are you coming with him?
